Sally Thackston Butler, beloved wife of Samuel C. Butler for 71 years, mother of Sam, Jr. (Susan), Leigh (Don), and Liz (Chris), passed away peacefully on October 12th at her home in New York City in the company of her family at the age of 93. Originally from Huntington, West Virginia, Sally was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend; she will be missed by everyone who knew her. A passionate volunteer, Sally supported many causes, including the Legal Aid Society; Vassar College, from which she graduated in 1952; the New York Junior League; the Spence School, where she was a trustee from 1966 to 1978 and Board Chair from 1972-76; the YWCA of NYC where she was President from 1998-2000; and the Cosmopolitan Club, where she was President of the Board from 2000-03. A lifelong lover of music and the arts, she regularly attended opera, ballet and the symphony at Lincoln Center. She was also an avid traveler with family and friends alike. In addition to her husband and children, Sally is survived by nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. A small family service will be held at the John Krtil Funeral Home.
