Mrs. Craigin Howard Salsgiver

Mrs. Craigin Howard Salsgiver, a resident of Dorset, Vermont, passed away at the age of 70 on September 23, 2026, after a short but hard-fought battle with cancer. She was a force in sickness, just as she was in health, making friends with fellow patients and healthcare workers while holding onto hope that she would beat her cancer until the very end.
The daughter of Dr. Calhoun L. H. Howard and Dorothy Johnson Howard, Craigin was born on August 25, 1956, in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts. She grew up in Summit, New Jersey, and spent her summers on Martha’s Vineyard.
After graduating from Bucknell University in 1978 with a B.A. in Economics, Craigin completed the management training program at Manufacturers Hanover Trust. She began her career in small business lending before joining Chemical Bank’s Metropolitan Division, where she became a large corporate lending officer. She later joined the merchant banking subsidiary of Lloyds International, working in project finance and concentrating on greenfield projects, including a number of continuing care retirement communities. She retired from banking following the birth of her first child.
Craigin placed great value on giving back to her community. Her volunteer work ranged from supporting her children’s schools and recreational activities to serving as an active member of the Junior Leagues of Stamford-Norwalk and New York for many years. More recently, she served as Chair of The Barn Sale in Manchester, Vermont, an annual fundraiser that has raised more than $1 million over the years for United Counseling Service, the primary provider of social services in southwestern Vermont, including mental health and early childhood services and programs.
Craigin was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be remembered for her warmth, energy, compassion, and sense of humor.
Craigin leaves behind her husband of 39 years, Jim; her daughter Elizabeth and husband Ryan Werffeli of New York, New York; her daughter Charlotte and husband Maeshal Abid of New York, New York; her daughter Katherine and husband Guido Crutchett of New York, New York; her daughter Amelia and partner Dr. Adam Spitz of Plainfield, New Hampshire; her three grandchildren, Layla and Lucy Abid and James Werffeli; her mother Dorothy Howard, of Dorset, Vermont; her sister Susan Caplan of Dorset, Vermont; her sister-in-law Janet Howard of Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts; her sister- and brother-in-law Karen and Peter Coveney of Westport, Connecticut; and her sister- and brother-in-law Jan and Tom Moloney of Palm Beach, Florida.
