Patrick “Pat” Gaffney
Patrick Gaffney, 81, of Manhattan, passed away peacefully on October 11, 2026, with his wife, Elaine, by his side.
Born in Ireland on January 18, 1945, Pat came to America at the age of five and built a life defined by hard work, quiet courage, fierce loyalty, and a heart of gold.
A proud Vietnam veteran, Pat approached life with remarkable strength and a philosophy that was quintessentially his own: What will be, will be. He was not one to worry, and he never gave up. For more than 30 years, he managed cooperative buildings, earning a reputation as a dedicated, dependable man who could always be counted on.
Beneath his tough exterior was a deeply tender heart. Pat was generous, compassionate, and fiercely loyal to those he loved. He never judged, loved unconditionally, and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone who needed one. He was the kind of friend who would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought.
Pat also took pride in the things he loved: a meticulously groomed car, a perfectly made Manhattan — no bitters and no fruit — or his beloved Johnnie Walker Black and soda. Ryan’s Daughter, his neighborhood Cheers, was a special place where friendships were nurtured and good times were shared.
Pat lived a rich a full life, on his own terms, with courage, conviction, and a generosity of spirit that touched countless lives. He leaves behind memories that will be cherished, stories that will be told for years to come, and a legacy of kindness, loyalty, and unconditional love.
As the old song reminds us, old soldiers never die. Pat will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
To Pat, we say: Well done.
Pat is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Elaine Traversone Gaffney, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Pat was predeceased by his sister, Joan, and brothers, John and Peter Gaffney.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, October 14 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at John Krtil Funeral Home, 1297 1st Avenue, New York, NY. A funeral mass is scheduled for 10:30 AM on October 15 at the Church of St. Monica, 413 East 79th Street, Manhattan. A Celebration of Pat’s life will follow at his beloved watering hole, Ryan’s Daughter, 350 East 85th Street. A private burial will take place at a later date.
