Debra Diane (Debbie) Newman shared her brilliance and her beauty with us in a life dedicated to family and good deeds, until February 8, 2022 following a brief but courageously fought battle with breast cancer.
Debbie was born to loving parents Jane and Peter Newman in New York City, grew up on Long Island and then graduated cum laude from Princeton University and Georgetown Law School. She had an illustrious and distinguished 23-year career as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District U.S. Attorney’s Office. A devoted daughter, Debbie retired early from the U.S. Attorney’s Office so that she could assist in the care of her mother after a devastating stroke. Debbie then pursued her passion for teaching, as a professor with Touro Law School and as a fulltime high school teacher with the New York City Public School System. She was especially devoted to her teenage students, leading many of her classes onto Debate Team championships and awards allowing them to perform on-stage with the Broadway cast of “Hamilton”.
Debbie was an avid fan of everything New York, from Broadway to Bloomingdale’s to “Law & Order”. She lived in Brooklyn Heights for approximately thirty years. Debbie is survived by her son Anthony, her father the Honorable (retired) Judge Peter J. Newman, as well as siblings Peter Jr. and Lisa Newman. She will be greatly missed by many.
