Sylvia Hochfield
Sylvia Lea Hochfield passed away on May 8th. Born in NY in the Bronx 91 years ago, she graduated from the University of California at Berkeley. After moving back to NY from England, where she had taught English literature, she studied for a masters degree in art history at Hunter College and worked for the Brooklyn Museum of Art. She then went to work for ARTnews, where, during her decades-long tenure as writer and editor, she changed art journalism from simple criticism to rigorous, investigative reporting. She is renowned for her work on such topics as artistic authenticity, Nazi-looted art, and museum ethics. Sylvia traveled extensively and had an enormous intellectual curiosity. As a voracious reader, she had expertise in a wide variety of topics. Her kindness and generosity will be missed by all.
