Ronald John Fagan

Ronald Fagan passed away on August 5th at the Chelsea Hotel in New York City, his home of more than fifty years. Ronald was an original – a true global citizen. Born in 1935 in Montreal, he was educated at McGill University and Sciences Politiques in Paris. Ronald was a career diplomat in the Canadian Foreign Service and acted for many years as senior advisor in the office of the Secretary General of the United Nations. He had a passion for history, politics, art, and his extended family who visited him often. A trip to New York was not complete without an afternoon at a gallery or museum in Ronald’s effervescent presence. In the early 1970’s he introduced the iconic Chelsea Hotel to his friend Leonard Cohen, who went on to immortalize it in song. Ronald saw New York as a “city of ideas” and the epicentre of important cultural movements. That special energy inspired him to his final days. Ronald was predeceased by his sister Nan Shannon, his brother Graham Fagan and his nephew David Shannon. He will be dearly missed by the Shannon, Sullivan and Fagan families, especially his nephews, Craig Shannon (Kristin), Donnie Shannon (Celia), Christopher Shannon (Hilary) and John Shannon (Christine, dec.) and his cousins Lynne (Bill), Anne (Peter), and Cassie (Al).
